Safe Drinking Water Management & Sustainability-WADI

The Balangir district has been plagued by chronic droughts, resulting in a severe shortage of drinking water during summer. The lack of rainfall and prolonged droughts have put immense stress on natural resources, leading to water, food, and fodder scarcity. The people in the region heavily rely on the Mahanadi River from the adjacent district, but even rivers like Lanth, Arjuni, Rahul, and Suktel dry up during summer. This forces the residents of Balangir district to use unsafe and unclean water, resulting in various diseases and suffering.

To address water scarcity and ensure safe drinking water, ASSA, in collaboration with CBM, has undertaken innovative measures. This includes the distribution of Water Disinfection (WADI) devices and empowering the rural community on the usage of safe water management through WADI and SODIS technology. The project also holds gram panchayats accountable for addressing water scarcity in their respective areas. Government entities like Jal Sathis and Water Committees are involved in activities related to safe drinking water and waste management. Over the past year, the villages have been using WADI and SODIS water for drinking purposes, significantly improving their health and overall well-being.
