Farmer Producer Company

Odisha’s agriculture sector is facing various challenges, including rising input costs, changes in monsoon patterns, and limited economies of scale. To address these challenges, potential solutions include increasing farmers’ prices, implementing improved practices to reduce inputs, adding value to products at the farm level, and providing farmer-friendly insurance and credit models.

However, a common underlying issue across these solutions is the need for effective reach and access. Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) can play a vital role in addressing this issue. FPOs help expand the farmer base, provide necessary inputs, purchase farm output, offer crop advice, facilitate credit and insurance, and support post-processing activities.

In the Bolangir district, ASSA is actively promoting three FPOs in Bongomunda, Muribahal, and Titlagarh. These FPOs focus on providing support to farmers in terms of paddy seeds, cotton marketing, and fertilizer inputs. For instance, they have provided 330 quintals of paddy seeds, facilitated the marketing of 280 quintals of cotton, and offered 200 quintals of fertilizer support to the farmers in the region. Three FPOs are:

  • JADEN FPO- procurement and Promotion of Millet, Spices, and incent sticks.
  • Krushaka Unnayan Sangathan FPO- Integrated farming.
  • Sambala Shakti FPO- Vegetables, Dal processing.

The objective of the Project:

  • Diversification from paddy to non-paddy crops with a focus on pulses & oil seeds and horticultural crops in upland / medium land in Kharif.
  • Improving soil health through the promotion of crops with heavy biomass and less chemical input requirement.
  • Integration with livestock and fisheries.
  • Cluster-based promotion of post-harvest, primary processing, value addition & marketing through CBOs like FPOs/ WSHGs and agri-entrepreneur for higher income.
  • To create awareness, capacity building, and community mobilization of farmers on the sustainability of cropping patterns and diet diversification.
